What is Valcyte?

Antiviral drug for systemic use.

What does Valcyte contain and how does it work?

The main substance is valganciclovir. In cells infected with a virus, with the participation of viral enzymes, ganciclovir is converted into a molecule of a nucleotide analogue, a chemical substance necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acid. Chemical similarity means that the modified ganciclovir replaces the correct viral nucleotide, disrupting viral DNA synthesis. As a result, the multiplication of viruses is inhibited. The resulting ganciclovir has an effect similar to that obtained after intravenous administration (similar pharmacokinetic parameters after an oral dose of 900 mg of valganciclovir or an intravenous dose of 5 mg / kg of ganciclovir). In patients with impaired renal function, elimination of ganciclovir occurs more slowly, and its biological half-life is much longer.

When to use Valcyte?

The drug is indicated:

• in the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in people with AIDS;
• in the prevention of cytomegalovirus infection in non-CMV-infected patients who received transplanted parenchymal disease from infected CMV donors.

When should you not use this medication?

Unfortunately, even if there are indications for use, it is not always possible to use it. You cannot use the drug if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients or to ganciclovir, acyclovir, valacyclovir.

The use of the drug during breastfeeding is contraindicated.

Precautionary measures

Some diseases and other circumstances may be a contraindication to use or an indication for changing the dosage of the drug. In some situations, it may be necessary to perform certain checks.

It should be borne in mind that the drug can be teratogenic and carcinogenic, which means that it can cause fetal malformations and birth defects, as well as tumors. It can also cause impaired fertility, temporary or permanent inhibition of spermatogenesis. People using the drug (both men and women) should always consult a doctor regarding the use of effective contraception to prevent pregnancy during the treatment period and in men for at least 3 months after stopping it.

It should be remembered that long-term effects are possible due to the carcinogenic and fertile effects of the drug.

The drug can cause hematological disorders such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, decreased white blood cell count, bone marrow depression, aplastic anemia. Particular care is required in patients with a deficiency of blood cells, including those with a history of drug-related deficiency of blood cells, and in patients undergoing radiation therapy.

The drug should not be started if there is significant neutropenia (neutrophil count less than 500 / μl) or thrombocytopenia (platelet count less than 25,000 / μl) or when the hemoglobin concentration is less than 8 g / dl.

There is no clinical data on the safety and efficacy of the drug in the elderly. There is insufficient clinical data on the safety and efficacy of the drug in children.
